I want an electric guitar & amp for christmas this year, but I would like to ask for a cheap one (because I know my mom doesn't have a lot of money to spend on us, and was hopeing to find one she could possibly afford).

I want one I can learn to play on, that is cheap, but won't crap out on me, and comes with an amp of good quality so that when I blare my tunes I don't bust it. I would prefer one I could have her buy physically from a store located around Columbus Ohio, but a trustworthy website would work too. I would prefer a new one, unless a good quality used one is that much cheaper and in a really good condition. I have no idea where to start looking for such a deal. Thanks! (=

The absolute best route to go in this case is an ibanez guitar with a line6 spider 2 or 3 combo amp (since he's just a beginner, something along the lines of 15 watts). Ibanez makes fantastic guitars for amazing prices. I've never been disappointed by one. Line6 isn't the best way to go if you're getting professional gear, but if you're just practicing in your room, it pulls off decent distortion and nice little effects. Go to your local guitar center, ask for a Ibanez GRX20Z and the cheapest line6 spider series amp you can get. Just make sure you have about a $250-300 budget. He should be fine on picks and cables if he already plays.

Probably your best bet is to go to a store that you can buy and sell musical instruments in. The people who work at the ones that I have done business with are very helpful and professional, without trying to get you to buy a piece of crap just for the commission. I used to like the Washburn BT-2 (I had 3) and probably you would want a fairly powerful amp, I used to have a Fender Princeton Chorus2-10. Also don't forget to get at least a distortion pedal, though you can also find good multi-effects like a Boss ME-30.
All this should cost around 400 bucks. Remember that the package deals you see at Wal-Mart or Best Buy are VERY cheaply made, and the amps are just about worthless.

Seriously, if you want a good quality guitar and an amp for not too much money then you are DEFINITELY better off considering getting a second hand set. Try looking on ebay for some good deals, although youll probably have to get the amp seperately.

regardless of where you buy it, a good quality but cheap guitar with an amp will run about $250 and up. I would recommend going to your local Guitar Center (guitarcenter.com) or other music store, Some good websites that i have bought stuff from without a single problem are: Samash.com, music123.com, musiciansfriend.com (best prices out there by FAR!!) or samedaymusic.com (best shipping). Good luck!
