The combined allied forces...........The Soviet Union, Britain, France, U.S.A., Canada, Australia and New Zeland. They defeated the combined forces of Germany, Italy and Japan.

That is if you can call the sacrifice of millions of lives, and the destruction of untold property a "win".

The Americans won. After the outcome of WWII The Americans emerged as a True Super Power Nation. The Americans economy began to boom. True Germany and Japan were rebuilt, by American businesses. Yes other corporations from other countries helped but mostly it was an American show. Americas world involvement was non-existent until after WWII. Now try and keep the Americans out of other Nations business.

anjelkake: I did not mean for the Americans to have won the war outright. I am refering to the fact that before WWII the American economy wasn't all that great. The US was still recovering from the Depression of 1929. SInce the end of WWII the US economy has led the world. No other nation has seen a jump to their economy as did the US. Therefore the US was the true winner of WWII.
US foreign policy has sucked since the beginning. Take a look at all of the recent US/world problems and look back at the US foreign policy and you will see that the US has created most of its own problems. Panama ?? Who put Noriega into power ?? The US. Iran: The US assisted the Shah. Saddam ?? US again. Why OIF ?? We were there 10 years ago and should have finished the job then.

Those countries who allied against the Germans.

It was a culmination of efforts of many countries...America's role strengthened an already formidable alliance.

For any one who says that America won WWII, are short sighted and ignorant. America had not won any actual war since the War of Independence (even speculated that the King abandoned the effort saying it wasn't worth it). Many wars after ie: Korean, Vietnam, etc, that were launched solely by the Americans have never seen to resolve the initial conflict. Only when America is allied has there been resolve to the conflict.

Difficult question, as in general wars have loads of victims.

What did Germany win: little, except it now has one of the better economies in the world in a stable environment and is able to allow it's people a good living.
What did they loose: loads, having 1000 bombers drop all they carry on a single village means the village (and the people living there) are gone. Many lives, many material things, the east germans suffering from the Sovient oppression and after that a communist government, having the state spy on all of its citizens.

What did Japan win ? Good economy.
What did Japan loose ? Being the only country having suffered not one, but two atomic bombs on populated areas and he subsequent fall-out. Loosing many more lives in a struggle that could not be won.

What did France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, win ? Not much, rebuilding the country offered a solid economy in the long run. but the losses and the frustration of the occupation outweigh it.

What did the UK win? Little, but some technological advances (radar e.g.)

What did the Stalin win ? Loads. It allowed the dictator to conquer half of Europe, turn it into a communist empire with him at the helm. While he lost lots of people in the war, he's not the man to care about that (having executed half of the commanding structure of his own army kinda proofs how little he cared). What did the soviets people loose: freedom, millions of lives.

US wins: lots of former German science and scientist (e.g. rockets (V1, V2), aircraft designs using jet engines, capability to breach the sound barrier, A-bomb technology all came from there), a strong manufacturing bases economy, lots of profits selling arms to the allies before they got attacked themselves.
US losses: lives, lots of them.

Palestine, Isreal: The British eventually came through on their promise to take Palestine and create Israel as a state (promise dating back to WWI). Hard to say who wins there. seems more like a loose-loose situation.

The world:
- Cold war is based on WWII
- A-bomb
- Millions of victims
- Bombing cities instead of military targets as a tactic
- ...

So my conclusion is: Perhaps some individuals won (like Stalin), but as a people, we all lost.

Technically the Allied forces (the US, England, France, Russia, etc) because there aren't any Nazis in power anymore.
