A pony is 14.2 hands high (at the withers, which is that hump that connects the neck with the rest of it's body) and below. A horse is 14.3 hh and above (at the withers). A hand is 4 inches. Ponies are usually (but not always) stockier and sometimes built a little "chubbier" than horses and horses are usually thinner and more slender. A PONY IS NOT A BABY HORSE!!!! please remember this deals with height NOT age. We have a 20 year old PONY that lives on our farm that is only 13.3hh. Trust me my mom is a riding instructer and has a degree in horses.

A pon is 8.2- 14.2 hands and a horse is 14.3 and higher. Anything under 8.2 is a miniature horse. A hand is four inches each. A PONY IS NOT A BABY HORSE!!! A lot of people think that but they aren't. A pony is full grown and will never become a big horse. So, it's just it's size that makes it a pony. Certain breeds are considered ponies and some are horses, some are both it all depends on their size.

Ahem, a FOAL is a baby horse - also called a Filly (if female) or Colt (if male). A pony never 'grows into a horse' - like the size difference between a Sheltland Sheepdog & a Collie, they reach the adult height they are programmed to by genetics. A pony is a smaller version of a horse, and the line of distinction wether it is a horse or pony is drawn by hands (measurement of height in horses) like this: http://www.equine-world.co.uk/about_horses/horse_height.htm Ponies also are generally stockier built than horses with somewhat dwarfed looking features, but not always. Many Pony Of The Americas often look like a full-sized horse, until you get close & size it up.

A mule is the result of breeding a jack (male borro) to a mare. The foal you get when you breed a horse stallion to a mare borro is called a Henny ( most of the time they will have a more horse like tail, shorter ears and a smaller head. they are also considered to be mules. Either cross is supposed to be steril. but there have been a few instances in history where a mule mare has had a foal. Horses and Mules have a different number of chromosones. Ponies are always under 14'2" A donkey and a burro are the same thing. A Mamoth Jack is just a very large borro.

The general rule is: Pony- any height up to 14.2 hands;
Horse- 14.2 hands and taller.
There are exceptions to this rule. Some of the older "Bulldog" style Quarter Horses tend to be around 14 - 14.1 hands tall, however even though they are pony height, they are still considered a horse. Same with Arabs, My stallion was a horse but he was only 14.1 hands tall. We also had a Pony of the Americas (registered) that was 14.3 hands tall.
The more correct classification rather than height would be the breed.

It's the height of the horse/pony in hand(4 inches to a hand). A pony is not a baby horse or foal!

A pony is a small breed of a horse. It is what size it is. Height wise. Ponies are common in giving children rides and visiting petting zoos.

pony is 1. a small horse of any of several breeds, usually not higher at the shoulder than 141/2 hands (58 in./146 cm).
2. a horse of any small type or breed.
and a horse is1. a large, solid-hoofed, herbivorous quadruped, Equus caballus, domesticated since prehistoric times, bred in a number of varieties, and used for carrying or pulling loads, for riding, and for racing.
2. a fully mature male animal of this type; stallion.
so basically a pony is a baby horse and a horse is a pony that grew up

Horses and ponies are the same thing, except the horse is the adult breed and the pony is the little one.
