This is my first time to work in UK. i have to leave the country as my brother had been shot in Iraq and is about to die. what should i do with my job? iam working in a cafe for 3 weeks only. i called the assistant manger the day i knew my brother has been shot and told her that i want to leave a notice in order to quit. she said generally the manger will keep your post for a period until he/she decides to replace you and this period up to the manger to decide. she said she will call the manger to find out more and will let her to call me as i don't her number. that was last Wednesday and i didn't get any call till today. i couldn't call or do anything as i am shocked and breaking down for what had happened. what am i supposed to do?
i have to wait for 2 weeks to get my passport as it is being prolonged.
what should i do in order quiting? what is my rights and duties toward this? should they give me any papers after quiting?

I am so sorry to hear about your brother, please accept my sympathy. you didn't say what country you are from, I feel you are American, did you come over to uk with your brother alone?
If so and your parents are back home then I understand why you want to go home. Is your brother going to die? or is there any chance he may pull through. I will pray for you, your brother and your parents.

If you have a contract then you may be able to claim compassionate leave because of your brother's situation.
This means your employer has to give you time off work. Speak to the Citizen's Adicie Bureau and Community Legal Service Direct. These are both free.
There are alot of jobs available in cafe and restaurants you may find when you get back.

if you have only worked in the cafe for only 3 weeks then really you don't have a job.
The company doesn't owe any loyalty to you and to be honest, jobs like that are all over the country and very easy to get.
I would go and see to your brother and worry about the job when/if you come back, a job like that will be easy to find.
Your brother is much more important so your priorities and thoughts should lie with him.

You should write a letter saying that you are leaving them, a week would be polite notice as you have only just joined. They should have already given you paperwork telling you what to do really. If they employed you properly and have taken your national insurance number, then they should give you a P45 form saying what has been paid to you so far. You will need to give it to your next employer or the jobcentre. I wish you and your brother well.

You should put your family first. When you get back to this country, you should be able to find another job if the one you have now is not available.
