I was told that my wheel must be in a certain position to limit the pressure on the sway bar links before I attempt to change them.

The sway bar is only actively working when you are cornering. It keeps the vehicle from drooping on one side in a corner. At a parked position, it doesn't matter which way the wheels are pointed. However as previously stated it is easier to have the wheels at the same height so if you jack up one side, you must jack up the other side to keep from binding the sway bar.

It does not matter. Straight ahead is fine. If you take one side loose at a time, the other will hold the sway bar in the same position. If you remove both sides at the same time, you can move the sway bar up or down as you need to.

jack the vehicle up under the frame in the middle and remove both links and then reinstall, if you jack one side up you will put the sway bar in a bind. wheel position doesnt matter although turning them to the right or left depending on which side you are working on will give you more room
