John H is right here but like him I can't find why Dave Plati called it the Red Zone.

Thank you John H this is the reason it was called the Red Zone

Plati, CU's director of media relations the past 21 years, always has been, as he says, "a stats guy."
It was through his love of football and number-crunching that he devised what now is referred to as
the "red zone." He still was a student at CU when he first brought the statistic to life.
"I always wanted to track different things, different stats," the 1982 Colorado graduate said. "I
started tracking it, I believe, in 1980. But I never called it the red zone. I first called it 'penetrating
the 20.' Then, 'scoring percentage inside the 20.' Now, I put 'red zone' in parentheses on our stat
sheets."
Plati knows he's not the first person to recognize the importance of scoring when a team ventures
close to the end zone, but he says he was the first to keep track of it.
"I don't want to say I was the first to invent it, but I was the first to chart it," he said. "I've got the
documentation to back it up. Unfortunately, there is no money in inventing a stat."
But there is the satisfaction of developing a new, usable tool.

Because it started out as USC's term and there end zone is red so they call the 20 yard line to the end zone the red zone
