Norton does not work.
Use these instead:
Comodo Antivirus
Comodo Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall Anti-Virus / Anti-Trojan
AVG Antivirus
XoftSpy
CounterSpy
AdAware
Using this mix, you should be able to find and remove most of what is on your machine.

Everyone else's posting I read answered your question about Norton, over and over and over.
Windows is the operating system for your computer, and has nothing to do with protecting the computer against viruses. You are supposed to add the protection to the computer. Any one of the free ones you've been told about will do a much better job of protecting the computer than Norton, or McAfee.

I have never been infected using Windows and AVG or Avast.
I have used AVG for over 4 years and Avast for the last 6 months.
If you need to remove Norton do this:
Removing Symantec / Norton AntiVirus and LiveUpdate
Click on Start and then Control Panel.
In the control panel, double-click on Add / Remove Programs.
Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says
either Symantec, Norton, or LiveUpdate (for example "Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2002").
Begin looking for Symantec or Norton items. LiveUpdate should be
done last. For each Symantec, Norton, or LiveUpdate item, select
the item and click Remove or Change / Remove or Add / Remove.
Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
NOTE: If you attempt to remove LiveUpdate and receive a warning
message about other Symantec applications being registered with
LiveUpdate, click Yes to ignore the warning and remove LiveUpdate.
When you are done, there should be no items in the list that say
"Norton,""Symantec," or "LiveUpdate."
Close the Add / Remove Programs window. Close the Control Panels
window.
Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
If present, delete the C:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
If present, delete the C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus
(or C:\Program Files\Norton) (or C:\Program Files\NavNT) folder.
If present, delete the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.
Also I recommend get a good Registry Cleaner like this:

Because most Anti-Virus programs like Nortons can only recognize the Malware once it is installed on your computer. Some programs that use Hueristics can recognize an infection in the first few lines of code and block the remaining Malware.

I do lots of computer repairs thanks to norton virus. If you really have a slow down on your computer or norton tells you it found but cant clean average is 3types of virus. You can clean it with no problem using mcafee virus. example my neibor had this same problem showed 3 in norton could not clean. I used my mcafee acct to clean his sys and found 174 virus and trojans on his hardrive. that norton couldnt do a thing with. Now his sys is back to perfection. Good Luck its never failed me.
