I know when you use a 56k modem you never dial up at that speed but I dial up between 24kbps and 28kbps. thats still pretty slow.

I'm guessing that you've tried various 56K modems and you believe that you should be getting 56K service.

56K is the 'MAXIMUM' that that modem can perform - -they never do (although 26 is pretty low; speads generally run somewhere between 40 and 50K). I would assume that your problem is the quality of the phone lines into your house, or you've not adjusted the settings in your modem set-up for optimum service...but is more than likely the phone lines in your area.

Many factors affect your Dial-up speed. The number of people on-line with your ISP, also, line noise. Example; I had a friend was running slow, I picked up her house phone and listened and I could hear noise. I plugged the phone direct into the phone box outside and the noise was gone. Got tracing wires and found where a mouse had chewed into the line and the wires were shorting with the wind. Fixed the wires and the Dial-up speed increased.
Also, check your Modem settings you may have it set for 28.8K and need to set it to 56K.

What is it that you are trying to get right? Just because you may have a 56k modem does not mean you will get that speed. Your phone line, how far away you are, all figure in to how fast you go.

Sounds like a problem with the modem on the other end OR a problem with line noise OR a problem with your phone wiring.

If you have a lot of phone extensions in the house, then it may be your phone wiring - there may be too many breaks in the line.
