I took everything out and made sure the spinner was balance. I also tried to start at the beginning of delicate, permapress and regular cycles, but when I pull the start knob, the washer only hums with no other response. I also tried to shake the water tubes to see if anything was backed up in there but they seem fine. I am not in a financial situation to call a mechanic so what do I do?

The water inlet solenoids will hum. If you have a faulty motor start switch the motor will hum, also if you have a capacitor to aid in starting or running and that is bad it ,( the motor ) will hum. It would hum also if there is too much of a load on the motor when it trys to start, for example bearing that are tight.

If you are not financially able to get a repairman to fix your washing machine you may have a vocational school nearby that trains students to work on small appliances, or perhaps there is a sympathetic neighbor who can help. It may be somethig very simple or something so expensive to fix that you may want to junk it out.

Could be overload...maybe you need to move the clothes more evenly. machine overload...did it make a noise before it stopped?
Power cord not plugged in, no pwer at the plug
blown fuse or circuit braker opened
timer not not pulled or or lined up
or if all else...belt may need to be replaced.... my son did this for me...it was not hard.

Unfortunately, It sounds to me like the "timer" has gone out on the machine and will need to be replaced. Sorry you're having problems with it. Larry
