Dependents on location. Also restrictions in the neighborhood. First check with the developer of the neighborhood. He may have restrictions, but he may not care. Then check with the planning department that covers your land. They may have requirements, but they may not. Sorry it's vague, but that's what you have to do. And the recreations for the neighborhood will probably be more well restrictive. You can put a chain link fence in old neighborhood, but try that in a new 300K per house subdivision, see how far you get.

Max height is set by locality so check with your city or county offices. I have 6 ft here and would have liked 0 - but more like 8 would be prefereable in my situation.

as high as you want, up to 6 feet you dont need a permit, over 6 feet you need a permit and specifications on how the fence will be built. also keep in mind that if you belong to a HO's association you probably cant go over 6 feet

This is something that varies with your city, town or village. Check at city hall. It could even vary by subdivision within a town!

Depends where you are, what local ordinances are. Are you in a subdivision where there is a homeowner's association with requirements? you need to ask questions locally.
