I have a Dell Dimension 4600, was given to me, bad video card. I am not going to use this for any kind of gaming mainly just email and im. Can I use just the onboard memory instead of buying a new card and if so what do I need to do to make it run on just the intergrated memory?

Thank you for your help, everything works fine except the high end card that came with went bad.My friend decided to just buy a new pc instead of another card. The problem is that the computer only runs in , I think 16 bit medium 640-480. The colors are fine just cant resize the screen size. Maybe I completely off base but thought the card had to do with the problem.

Bad video card or bad RAM
If it has onboard video thats fine. The video has nothing to do with onboard memory.
Should boot right up. If not just clear the cmos and then boot up. Thats the 3 pin jumper next to battery on Main Board

Just take the bad video card out of the AGP or PCI slot and the motherboard will default back to the onboard video. If you wish to add a video card later the motherboard will default back to the VGA or PCI slot. If you get no video from the onboard video. The person that owned it before, the on onboard video may have wen bad and the person added a card which is now bad also. You would need to get a new video card...Thanks Check www.tigerdirect.com or ebay under computer_surplus2005 I usually have a few video cards laying around for under $5.00 each + shipping....Thanks

YES, to change your video card to on bored memory, you simply just need to go into the BIOS and change the Video setting from you Video card to you on bored card (this will remove the option to use you video card completely) then just plug you monitor/screen into the port built onto your mother bored (if will be within a lot of ports some where near the top of the box at the back).

You can also just change the setting within Windows in the screen settings.

I will assume you mean the onboard video is bad...if that is the case you can not do anything but get a new video card. you can get a new basic video card for less than $10.00 on http://www.tigerdirect.com
hope it works out for ya.
