im 14 and in the 9th grade. ive been writing in general for about 4 yrs on and off. ive been writing stories for the last 3 yrs i think.
this is how i brainstorm: when im inspired, i think of characters, their traits pasts and family. Then the conflict and how to build up the the conflict. If im thinking straight i MIGHT make and outline of the story. If i dont then i actually daydream the story so i can get a feel of what going on. For people who don't understand that, I basically make a movie in my head about the storty so i can better understand what will and should happen in the story.
In the last three yrs, i believe i've finished 3-7 short stories, no i don't write novels, I won't go that far until i can get passed short stories. for some reason, i can never finish a story. i can think of the beginning and the end, just nothing in between.
What tips do you have?
oh and one more thing. How do you deal with too many story ideas that you cant get out of you mind?

to answer Geoffry down there, yes ive always been the oddball of the math whizz family. I aspire to be a part-time and really do want to make books and stories that seem to make more sense of what makes the world go round. Having said that, i need ideas that will help me finish a story so i can have my friends read it as a whole as my primary editors then i might be able to get published one day or another

one last thing!!!
I'm 14 in a very busy family. i don't have many resources, besides the computer school and my friend's families :-P
I can't get many rides anywhere without a reason. If i say that i want an inspiration for a story, they'll more than likely to walk away and tell me to get a car a liscence and money for gas. i have none of the above because i don't get an allowance so i can't save up for anything and i'm in the lower-middle class so please consider that.

I'm also a young writer, (younger than you) and what I do is open up "WORD" on my computer and title the page notes. i do a mini biography of all of my characters and then write the problem, solutions, a POSSIBLE EVENTS COLLUMN in this collumn i write things that i think sound cool or add something to the story. I've just recently started this technique and i'm already on chapter 5 in my new story. Hope it works out!

Flesh out your characters' personalities more. The more real they become, the easier they will take you to story lines that you may not have guessed.

Good writers are good readers. Pick a few authors you like and read up on some of their techniques. I have looked into JKRowlings' interviews to get Harry Potter books published.

She would go to local cafes and observe people around the area. Habits, traits, quirky things would help bring her characters more to life.

Although JKR plans out much of her story in advance, other authors will write as if they are travelling through a mist. You can only see as far as the next corner, then get a surprise when you get past there.

Good luck

Carry around a notebook and write down any ideas you have, pieces of ideas, or any phrases or things you see that inspire you! This is a way to get the ideas out of your head and on paper for the right time. Keep writing, even if you don't finish anything. Write, write, write! Writing makes you a writer, not the ideas.

Research the lives of famous published writers. Read biographies of them, and gain inspiration from their careers.

You are very lucky!! The rest of us frustrated writers have too few ideas. Your imagination is what will lead to your success. Good luck, and keep writing!

You kno what? I also have too many story outlines. But I just write them down in a document, and then slowly hink through the characters. Do a bit of it everyday. The middle will always come around. Instead of the characters just knowing somehting, you can wirte of when they heard the info, a memory from sometime ago, etc. Don't worry, you'll get it.
