She is the main character in an opera by puccini. She is a 15 year old giesha, that is taken to be married by an american soldier, But he goes back off to war, impregnates, and then abandons her, causing her shame and etc.

Its really a lovely opera, and says a lot about japanese culture, if that interests you.
