I'd like to say that they're completely different, but sadly, I fear emo music DOES have roots in punk/post punk.

Emo- stands for emotional, and the music is just that, and is generally about personal issues. Lots of whiny voices, and the style is very influenced by punk and goth styles.

Punk- the word "punk" conjures images of troublemakers, but that's not always the case. A lot of punk music focuses on global or societal issues, and it CAN be angry, but it's often upbeat and energetic. Generally a good singing voice is not necessary, as in emo, however when it is absent, punk artists do not TRY to sing (and therefore do not produce the irritating whine of emo artists). The style is very DIY.

Sigh. yea. Okay, punk is angry, almost metal, but not. They sometimes make their own jackets and stuff. They are really cool and down to earth ppl. EMO is gay. They dress how ever the fashon on tv says. And they listen to wierd screaming guys that haven't hit there maturity.

Emo is basically a newer form of punk, though there are parties on both sides who will debate their common musical ancestry until the end of time.
