I just bought a PSP and in the box there is a disc with some software update...if I run the update will it update both the PSP software and the firmware or only the software? I don't want to update the firmware...thanks!

The PSP firmware is the only item that gets updated when you run an OS update from a UMD disk. There is no 'software' to update to the PSP. Many games include system updates (read firmware update) to update the PSP operating system to the required firmware for that game.

If a game disk has a system update application on the disk, then that the game will not run unless that firmware version is installed. So, if your PSP is at version 2.8 firmware and the game requires 3.01 and includes a 3.01 updater, then you must update the firmware to 3.01 to play that game. The game will not play otherwise.

However, if you have a game that includes a 2.5 updater and you're at 2.8, then there is no need to do anything. The older games always play on the newest firmware version.

Also, you can update through the disk provided or you can update over the Internet (assuming you have Internet access available).

Keep in mind that if your PSP is at 1.5 and you want to play the most recent games, you must update to the firmware required for that game. However, if you update to a firmware beyond 2.0, you will not be able to downgrade your PSP back to 1.5. If your firmware is already beyond 2.01, then you might as well update to the latest firmware as there is no reason not to.

It's all up to you as far as updating and how far you are willing to update. I personally bought 2 PSPs. One to leave at 1.5 for homebrew and one to update to the latest version so I can play commercial games. Keep in mind, you won't know the firmware required to play a specific game until you buy the game and insert it into the drive. You might be able to scour the web for someone who's created a database of this information, but I've not yet found one.

But, if you've spent the money for a game and that game requires that you to update your PSP firmware, you might as well do it unless you like paying $35 or more for a UMD coaster.
