we call them O2 sensors here. what they do is measure the burnt gasses coming out of the engine to determine air-fuel ratio. but a simple explination with a diagram is crazy because now you start to factor in other sensors that help with timing, injector pulse width and so on. now a mechanical air-fuel gauge runs off of vacuum and isnt a very reliable piece. now an aftermarket version that uses a sensor just like an O2 sensor and just measures the burnt fuel during all throttle positions and lets a good mechanic know where adjustments are needed ( especially good with a carburated vehicle that races or uses the full rpm range) just a little info :)
