It's really huge for gambling, as everyone knows, and it is also a great source of American memerobilia, such as Elvis themed stuff. A friend of mine and his wife who run an Elvis themed bar (The Jailhouse Rock Bar) try to go there at least twice a year, to buy more quirky stuff for the bar (last time he brought back a load of funny signs) and to get their marriage vows renewed. It's not essential to do this, as it is a legal and binding marriage, but it is a tradition for people who get married in Vegas to do this every year.

It's a lot of fun to visit, especially if you're there with someone who's never been there before. The tourist version of Las Vegas is like nothing else on earth. All the lights and the glamour, and the novelty of having a 24 hour town leaves quite an impression on you. The casinos on the Las Vegas Strip are magnificent, and there is always something to do.

On the flip side, it's not that great to live there. I lived in Las Vegas for 4 years, and it is a very transient town. A lot of people move there, stay a few months, then move on. The employers are not like the employers where I live now. In Las Vegas, it seems as if most employers don't really value their employees -- if they don't like you or the job you are doing, there are thousands waiting in line to take your place, so they don't care. Housing is very expensive, especially if you want to live in a decent part of the city. Gambling is too much of a danger to many who live there. I knew people who worked as dealers in the off-strip casinos and they were always seeing people come in and gamble their rent money, or their utility money, or their food money. Most of the people I met were two-faced --- nice to your face, then as soon as you left the room, they talked behind your back. Although the city is beautiful, and the landscape outside of the city is breathtaking, I would never consider moving back to Las Vegas. I would definitely visit though.

Las Vegas is the best place to go for just about any and everything: drinking, gambling, partying, sight seeing, attractions, food, shopping, weddings, etc. Anything you need, you can find it there.

What might help with your dissertation is to find at least one person who goes for a specific reason. For example, I don't go to Vegas to party or drink. I love the slot machines and food. If you can, try to interview a couple who got married there. Ask them where they are from? Why they chose Las Vegas? What type of wedding did they have? Big? Drive through? Themed? Etc.? Then, find the gambler. The person who spends thousands of dollars a few times a year. You might even want to find a "Local" and get their perspective of Vegas. Their views are often so very different to those of us who like to visit. Also, if you have access to the travel channel, they always have programs on "Vegas Do's and Dont's", "Best places to stay, eat, etc.", "Historic Vegas" and many others.

What a GREAT dissertation you are going to have! It's sounds like it has the potential to be really good. If it is ever published, I'd love to read it.

Las Vegas was awesome especially the shows. if you want to shop here, then be prepared to spend a lot of money. Also, no matter what hotel you are planning to stay at, there are casinos everywhere. A lot of people don't win unless you're an expert at gambling. Even slot machines are tough to win some bucks. The strip is very hectic and a lot of people will push you if you are not walking fast.

Very busy. Between the people, the insane traffic, constant lights day or night. But laid back in a way. It's fine to wander the strip at any hour, even with a drink in hand. When the partying really gets going it can seem very overwhelming.

Nice to visit, but wouldn't want to live there. I have relatives and friends who want to move away from it all because they're raising kids now.
