dude you need to buy some books. its not that simple except it uses information gathered by the PCM ( engine computor ) to fire the spark plugs at the proper time. and we can be talking about 5 to 7 to 10 different sensors. my jeep still has a distributor but its hollow and it works like i have mentioned above. it just uses the old distributor drive to drive the oil pump and hold the spark plug wires, cap and rotor ?!?!?!?!?!
