"History" is the written word. Before people recorded events etc.
by some form of writing, they had songs & stories handed down from generation to generation. But these are only regarded as legends as many were changed in the telling & re-telling.

If someone wrote about a time in history, the ruling government would stop it being published unless it complimented the side that won. Many innocent people have been persecuted (Witch hunts; new religions starting; political prisoners) but their story is lost in history many times, because that history would be embarrassing to the winners or rulers of the age.

In James Clavell's historical novel, "Shogun", an American was asked if it wasn't treason to fight against the English for Independence. His answer was "Only if we loose." - The Japanese war lord laughed.

The main source of history is in text form. Ancient texts etc, updated and journals of people throughout time.
