They have erected a line of cameras on the highway which are there for various purposes. They include: To monitor speeding, reckless driving (which I heard will even catch people who do not keep their following distance), to monitor crime, such as cash heists and killings (because of previous incidents such as the few murders that have happened at the Rivonia off ramp). They are extremely accurate cameras and no matter how fast you are driving, or how many cars are following each other, it will catch each individual car. The highways are no longer a race track! If you race-you get caught! ;)

It is part of the new i-traffic project. There are information boards along the highway, informing road users about the state of the highwayt,i.e. if there is an accident somewhere, if traffic is flowing or congested ext. These cameras where put up to minotor the roads and in turn the info boards give the user that info. They are somehow trying to ease the congestion on the N1 and M1.

CCTV? Maybe that particular area has lots of cash in transit heists, or maybe it is used to capture other criminal activities.
I don't think the height makes a difference. I've seen speed traps on top of bridges catching cars that pass underneath. Maybe their high up so that people don't damage them or steal them, I mean this is SA, I wont be surprised if someone steals a speed camera.

Might be the 'big brother' cameras to help fight crime, but what i really want to know about them is, is there anyone monitoring them? There's no use wasting all that money on those cameras and not having them monitored. This has happened before in KZN.

Could be several reasons:
For authorities to photo speeders.
Allows Hwy. Mgt. to monitor traffic flow.
Allows drivers to view generally congested routes prior to driving thru that area.
Allows individuals to view progress on major road construction projects.
