I don't mean like the fat singer actually died at the end, I mean, like the story of the opera was a tragedy, you know like Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy. Like that, but with operas!

Thanks.

Many, but not all, operas have tragic endings. Here are a few that I would consider "Most tragic":

Tosca
Madama Butterfly
La Boheme
Rigoletto
La Traviata
Otello
La Forza del Destino
Pagliacci
Cavalleria Rusticana
Tristan und Isolde

There are lots more, but that's a start!

Most operas are tragic. Check out the works of Puccini, or Giuseppe Verdi, and have yourself a good cry. Google these guys to get complete works. Mozart and Rossini are quite a bit different and not so sad, more about the music and what it can do. American opera is very tragic, and you can look at the works of Minnoti (The Telephone, etc.) When you consider the works of American Stephen Sondheim, look at The Assassins, and even the amazing Sweeney Todd. Puccini is the God of tragic opera in my opinion, and don't leave him out in your search. Hope this guides you in some direction you can use. Richardthelion.

There are many. Someone has already mentioned Verdi's Otello. He also wrote one based on Macbeth. La Traviata is also a tragedy, as are Aida, Don Carlo, The Force of Destiny and many others by him. Look at Puccini's Madam Butterfly and La Boheme. Coming more up to date we have Britten's Peter Grimes. Is that enough for the moment?

Are there any real Grand Operas that aren't?
Rigaletto (that one is a corker), Wagner's ring cycle is a sob story (among other things), Tosca, Carmen, I think that there is an operatic Romeo and Juliet (modern) Il Travatore, La traviarta, and loads of others.

From a younger prospective...I'd recommend "Tommy", great tragic story, wonderful bizarre characters, and easily the best musical score of any opera written in the last several centuries.

Othello is an opera tragedy too.

Love could nicely be heaven or hell. it rather is a dream come real or your worst nightmare. Love can exceedingly plenty be regardless of you prefer it to be, I mean the alternative of what you prefer it to be. :)
