Smell is one of the basic senses. Most of human development happens before the age 5. Early development of the senses is vital.

A sense of small is still needed in the modern world. As urbanization continues our noses tell us when to hold our breath for minute rather than take in a noxious odor. The sense is not just used to choose a favorite perfume, though that is nice too.

The sense of smell is tied closely with the sense of taste and any lack of either could affect how the child eats. Also all sensory input is needed in a young child to help create the neutral pathways which complete normal brain function. If a child is deprived of touch, taste, sound or smell, the pathways will not form. This has been known to cause children to grow up mentally deficiant, unable to speak, to hear or bond emotionally with others. All for a lack of gentle stimulation as a child.
