I am visiting Toronto and was planning on seeing Wicked at the Canon Theatre in mid-late December. I wanted to wear designer jeans with a blazer, a nice dress shirt, and oxford shoes.

My cousin has told to me that this isn't really appropriate. What would be appropriate dress for this theatre? Or is what I planned to wear ok?

The theater is changing, as are the audiences. It has become more lax and less pretentious. (which in my opinion is the way the arts should be!) That being said however, means that people are no longer "dressing" for the theater as they might have in years gone by. Although jeans are seen they are probably still not the best option. A slightly dressier attire, if possible would be nice... though I am of the thought that you should dress as best you can without being "formal". Depending on how your jeans look, I might give it ago.

As a last resource, call the theater, and ask them if they have a dress code.

Enjoy the show, it's FABULOUS!

Personally I wouldn't wear jeans, especially if you're going to an evening show. Try slacks with the blazer and shirt, because the unspoken dress code is a littlle on the formal side.

Off-topic, I'm so jealous, Shoshana Bean is absolutely amazing. Hope you enjoy it. :)

Please no jeans to the theater. Were you attending a high school production, that would be one thing, but proffessional live theater is deserving of classier atire. Rather than jeans maybe consider substituting a pair of slacks. You don't have to dress to the nines, but casual is definitely NOT the way to go.

I think a pair of slacks with your blazer would be fine. Jeans would be totally tacky and unrefined. Show some class...you wouldn't wear bib overalls to dinner with the Queen would you?
