The cricket competition between England and Australia is called The Ashes because when Australia beat England in England for the very first time in 1882 (by only 7 runs) it was said that English cricket had died, and so the day after the match The Sporting Times printed a mock obituary which read:
In Affectionate Remembrance
of
English Cricket,
which died at The Oval
on
29th August 1882
Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances
R.I.P
N.B - The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia
The English media dubbed the next tour to Australia (1882-83) as 'the quest to regain The Ashes'
During the 1882-83 tour a small terracota urn was presented to the England captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melborne women the contents of which is said to be the ashes of a bail or a stump. The original urn is no longer used as the trophy as it is said to be to fragile to travel and so it is kept in the MCC Museum at Lords where it was left by Ivo Bligh when he died, instead the winners receive a crystal trophy and a replica of the urn.

In the Test Match played between England and Australia at The Oval, Australia defeated England for the first time. After this defeat a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882 stating that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour, to Australia (1882-83) as the quest to regain The Ashes.
This is how the Test series between England and Australia has been named as Ashes series.

"The Ashes" is the trophy that the teams compete for. There is a certain amount of dispute regarding what the trophy contains, it is widely believed that the trophy contains the bails from the third test in 1882, but more recently it has been suggested that it may be the ashes of a ball, or even possibly the ashes of the veil of the mother of Lord Darnley

the trophy contains the ashes of a stump representing the death of English cricket and was presented to the MCC on their defeat by Australia, ironicly it is now the winner of the series that is presented with the trophy.
