It's sad but true.
As parents our job is becoming harder. My 11 year old tells me everyday that she is a teenager now and should be allowed to do this or do that. The media, music industry and movies are not helping the situation.
I only allow her to watch disney or nick but even on those networks the contents are so mature. Like on Raven, she was crushing on some guy and then gave him a heated tongue kiss. what the heck?
The sexual suggestiveness and content on these shows are so strong and the "kids" on the shows wear revealing clothing and have all of these high tech gadgets. My daughter feels that she is the only kid on earth without these things and that I am unfair. I have to explain to her over and over that, #1 - that's in TV world and the average parent can not afford those things. #2- that she should not be in an hurry to grow up because the world is not easy and it's hard when you have to take responsiblity and support yourself. I plee with her to just enjoy being a kid becasuse she will miss these years when she's all grown up.
What are we to do as parents? I know that i am going to hang on to her as long as possible. I still pick out her clothes, after all I am the one paying for them, I allow her some input on styles but the final decision is mine. I style her hair, no grown up styles. I monitor everything and she might hate me now but I think that she will appreciate me for it later in life when she is a successful, humble, responsible adult.
I just have to do more than my best to keep her on the right level and pray a lot. :-) ......I also spend a lot of time with her renting old movies from the 80's and watching afterschool specials, like the old degrassi junior high programs. We discuss the topics and why it was right or wrong.
Thanks......what are your thoughts? I don't think the article gave enough tips on how to deal with this phase.

I have been saying the same things for at least a year now. I have a friend that has four younger kids, every time i go over there one of those programs is on. It drives me crazy to see kids being so disrespectful to their parents. I would not let my kids watch stuff like that.
This past summer the kids that live down the street would come over and hang out with me. I'm not weird or anything they just liked playing with my dogs, and I don't think that they had much else to do, anyway one of them told me that she didn't want to get pregnant before she was seventeen... She is ten years old. On top of that some of the stuff that came out of there mouths was just crazy. They were comfortable using the f word (not around me, but if they didn't think that i was listening) They new all about sex and stuff that i didn't know till i was at least thirteen.
That was a good article. thanks for sharing

With all the stimuli out there it is no wonder that kids are growing up way too fast. Ten year olds of yesterday never had the kinds of violence and sexually explicit images around them that kids of today just take for granted...I think it is a sad commentary on today's society as a whole.

its kinda sad to have to grow up too soon...and whats worst is that it has nothing to do with maturing in the right sense...makes u think where are the parents at??
i'm 22 but if i have kids someday i wouldn't want them to get into the whole dating scene or anything related to that before they turn 17 or 18. i think parents should sit up, take notice and start caring waaay before the kids start getting weird ideas from the stuff they hear on today's music or the stuff they see on tv.
