I'm refering to the scenario where there is a presenter reading out the name to a group of contestants as to who is 'going home' 'going on to the next round'.

I can understand them trying to built the tension, but they just seem do go too far with 15 + seconds of silence.

What do you think?

I agree with you - especially when after 15 seconds they say "we'll know in half an hour" or "we'll find out after the break".

It's very annoying!

I counted 15 seconds on X Factor - will they ever stop this silly act. Strictly Come Dancing is the same - and Deal or No Deal. Perhaps I'm watching too much on the box - but this behaviour gets me so uptight - I want to kick the television through the window.

You are correct, they are going too far sometimes in order to create expectation . They can make spectators to loose interest instead.
Everything has a limit and that makes the difference between a good presenter and a mediocre one.

It's the same on Deal or no Deal. The contestant says "Ask me the question" and then takes ages to answer. Gets me really naggy.

Pauses in a speach means the speaker is unprepared. When you know the material you are much more confident, less afraid and avoid the uh - um's.

Like a lot of this drivel, (what I call 'no-intilligence-required' TV), it's cynical manipulation of stupid hysterical audiences.
