Charlotte Bronte was born in 1816 and Jane Eyre was written in 1847.

The year before that Charlotte had published "Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell" written with her sister Emily and Anne, which had sold just two copies. She had also written a novel called "The Professor" but this was not published until 1857, two years after her death during pregnancy in 1855.

Charlotte continued to write and publish under the name of Currer Bell and followed Jane Eyre with "Shirley" (1848) and "Vilette" (1853).
