if you have the DS set up so that when you turn the power on, a game plays, you need to turn that function off.
if the above is true, turn on the DS when there are no games in either the DS slot or the GBA slot

now, your friend, who is in the same room as you, will suddenly have the option of talking to you through the DS

in the main menu of the ds, when it turns on. below the ds game block i think. is picto chat, or somthing like that. in there will be 4 rooms a,b,c,d you pick one, and you are there, than you can start drawing and typing stuff. its prety cool.
