If you mean preserve, look up conservation and preservation of art and antiquities or some combination of those terms. There is a lot of information on these subjects. They are becoming quite scientific in their approach. In the past poorly trained dilettantes would "touch up" great paintings in a highly destructive process. Now, well trained conservators do the work, although there is still controversy over certain approaches.

I guess you are asking how we preserve our art and architecture.

There is a happy medium to strike with architecture. The builders of edifices such as the Gothic cathedrals, for instance, were creating something dangerous and new at the time they were constructed. You only need to look at places like Lincoln and Durham to see how they would (and still do) dwarf the surrounding architecture.

Now imagine we want to build something radically new like that these days............planning permission would be vetoed because the new building would be "out of keeping" with its surroundings.

I am not saying that we should not preserve our past, but we need to be careful that we do not stifle the creativity and opportunity to build what will become the historical culture of the future.
