a long long way. I live on Costa blanca which is between the two. I'd have to drive for 5 hours north to reach barcelona and about the same south for the costa del sol.

Around 800kms at a rough guess. But one things for sure it's a bloody long way from the Costa del Sol to Catalonia where Barcelona is. You have to travel through the Costa Blanca. Happy travelling

For what you describe, mainly because of the beaches, Costa del Sol would be the place. Barcelona is the 2nd largest city but it is a port city, not a beach resort. Barcelona has more culture, bars and resturant, and last time I was in Spain, the drinking age was 18.

Well I live in Catalunya north of Barcelona and I know that Almeria is 1000km so as Barca is south of us and Marbella is south of Almeria by a similar looking gap in the map I would go with a similar distance 1000km.
