Well, we DO air shows from other countries...mostly Japanese cartoons. Why do they air our shows? Well, the mean answer is that they are obsessed with us, and the nice answer is that American culture is somewhat neutral compared to other cultures.

I'm not certain, but I've heard it mostly revolves around the reasons of:
1. Money - a lot of countries can' t afford to make a lot television shows to run in their own countries let alone someone else's.
2. Enough Americans aren't interested in foreign programming to make it worth the networks time.

Because most Americans love crap such as their TV and fast food. They have real problems with quality television, preferring their fantasy that the US is greatest civilisation. For them, the world does not exist beyond the US border.
When a very occasional overseas show, such as 'The Office' is adapted for US television, the concept that made it successful is totally lost.
Unfortunately, due to marketing, a vice that the US is excellent at, this crap is also successful amongst impressionable youngsters and morons away from their shores.

People are lazy, and if they can get TV in their own language and in their own culture they won't make an effort to find things from far away. Thus we have British imports and nothing else. It is a sad fact that the English language's success has made us the most provincial people in the world.

It's a very competative market where network execs won't take uneccesary risks, but some shows from abroad make it through. They usually have to make an impression on cable first.

Don't lose heart, Aussies are discerning enough to filter out a great deal of US content to seek the best of our own home-grown and that of the UK!
