I think it is effective in some cases, however my father didn't get results. He had pain from brain cancer, and it didn't really help with his case. I think it is used for the relief of muscle tension. In some cases, it forces the muscle to relax.

Acupuncture (needle therapy) is a technique of inserting and manipulating needles into "acupuncture points" on the body. According to acupunctural teachings this will restore health and well-being, and is particularly good at treating pain.
I have experienced accupuncture for two month and it was realli helpful, but its very painful ...if u wish to take da pain n get a healthy life foreva...dis is best option...

I get frequent treatments, I think highly of acupuncture as an alternative mode of healing. I don't like needles either, but I do fine with it- the needles are very very fine and you can't really feel them.
The most important thing though, is finding a credited/licensed acupuncturist:

I've had accupuncture treatment for my back; I suffered a fractured vertebrae about 2 months ago, and altho it's healing, the pain can be bad at times. I've found that altho chiropractic treatments are helpful, the accupuncture is an added benefit. I don't relay on pain-killers such as Tylenol as they lose their effect after a while.

I've been seeing an acupuncturist for many years and I love it. It has relieved my migraines and a lot of my sinus problems.
The needles are finer than a strand of hair, and it doesn't hurt. It feels a little strange and sometimes there is some pressure where the needle is inserted, but if it's painful it's time to find another acupuncturist.

It works, but takes time. I had a finger that springs up uncontrollably. The doctor said a surgery 'might' work, but it may just come back after sometime.
I had acupunture treatment over a 6-month period and the problem was solved. You need to have confidence.
