Perhaps you are confusing "afraid" with "resent". I am not afraid of anyone but I am resentful that foreign peoples come to my country. Take advantage of it's freedoms and educational system. Then return home to their mother country and bad mouth my country and it's people. We Americans are some of the kindest, most generous people on this planet, as well as the most maligned. Your country has an earthquake or flood it will be the American people that come to your aid first. We had a flood in New Orleans and few countries offered assistance to us. After decades of being ostracized by the world it's no wonder we Americans feel the way we do!

Except the minority Indians, America is
full of foreigners since the early days.
Only the American Indians may say ' we
are afraid of foreigners.'

We fear what we don't know or understand. Foreigners are the same way to many Americans. We haven't met them & we don't understand them, so we fear them. Unfortunately, 9/11 & the immigration debate isn't helping much. We don't know if Luis is a 5th generation American of Mexican heritage from a remote area of Arizona, a part of a terrorist sleeper cell that is planning to blow up a foreign consulate, or if he swam across the Rio Grande yesterday to find better opportunities. Our government adds to the fear by not shoring up all of our borders to make it harder for opportunity Luis & terrorist Luis to come into our country without having proper paperwork or shipping them out if they don't.

Personally, I like to talk to people from other countries, but too many of them come to the US, wrap themselves in their home country's culture, and don't learn English or anything about American culture. When they have a need to communicate, they expect the American to come to their terms, not the other way around. That is where more fear & frustration comes in. The foreign born person who refuses to learn English has no clue that they are being taken or are in danger if a procedure isn't followed properly.

No big cat,

we are not afraid of foreigners, we are just sick when we see that the world is going so ******* mad and that nobody helps us in making it a better place for us and for us.

The real question should be, how much did you have to drink tonight ?

And do you know what, I think you're wrong, the mask doesn't come off when you pull it down, for the simple reason that their is no mask.

For all of our global reach, America's eyes are almost exclusively focused inward. For example, if you happen to reside in the Western Hemisphere, south of the Rio Grande, then surprise, you are Mexican. It is an amazing naivette that is not shared really by any other open states.
So, I don't believe that Americans are afraid of foreigners, we just generally don't have a global view.

I think most Americans are totally ambivalent towards the rest of the world.

The vast majority of them have never left the USA and so have little opinion or knowledge of other peoples.

Point to illustrate this:- Once, in Illinois, a guy on a train I was chatting to asked me what language we speak in England.... shocking but true!
