In Australia, statistically women are better drivers. A lot of insurance companies are now offering lower rates for women drivers. Personally, I think the statistics are a bit wrong. Firstly, here there are more male drivers than female drivers, because a lot of the transport jobs are done by men, so you would expect there to be more accidents where males are involved. Secondly, male drivers tend to be more aggressive on the roads than females, so again you would expect more accidents here. But if you take 1 good male driver and 1 good female driver, why would one be a better driver over the other. Really, what does gender have to do with driving, would'nt attitude and skill on the road be the most important factors.

Your answer will depend on what, precisely, you mean by "better driver". Many respondents have related the well-established fact that (at least for most age ranges and in most places) women are involved in less insurance-related accidents than men.

But, as at least one other person has indicated, use of automobiles by men and women also varies widely. I don't have hard statistics available, but I imagine that in most places, men drive many more miles per year than women, on average. If the question you're trying to answer is "Which is safer: driving a hundred miles with a man or woman as driver?", then it will be neccessary to factor out the difference in automobile use by men and women (when and where they tend to drive, for how long, etc.).

If you regard the likelihood of having an accident as an indicator of driving ability, then men are worse drivers than women. If you regard exceeding the speed limit as the indicator (because it shows an inability to control the vehicle) then men are more likely to speed than women.
From a personal observation: Most women drivers park better than men drivers.

Therefore, if you regard chances of an accident or chances of exceeding the speed limit as the criteria: most women drive better than most men.

Women are better drivers because men seem to get angrier and have more road rage than women which makes them concentrate less.

Statistically, females have less accidents then males.

There are many places to find the statistics. Here's just one quote from a site: "male vs female"

"Male drivers involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes are almost twice as likelyas female drivers to be intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or greater (NHTSA 2004b)."

A BAC of 0.08% is equal to or greater than the legal limit in most states.

Who is it that feels most like they own the road? It is not usually women.

Personally, I think it depends on the person. But if you were to get, like, a percentage of better drivers, it would have to be women. When women drive, their usually careful and considerate. Men go nuts (sorry, guys, but it's true). This, of course is just an example of MOST men and women. http://www.flashfunpages.com/couple.swf

I reckon it's different in each country. For example, in my country (Indonesia) men drives better, and now I live in Australia, and it seems that more women drivers here. I think because Aussie men sometimes get drunk and just don't want to drive ^__^

I definately think women. That is why our rates for insurance are lower. I was in a horrible freeway accident where the guy admitted to changing a cd and not looking.. Hello... We were in the fast lane on the freeway in LA, who doesn't pay attention???
His oopsie cost me 125,000 in medical bills for back surgery, neck surgery, shoulder surgery and tons of physical therapy... He only had 100,000 worth of insurance and not a penny to his name... I got stuck with the difference and never recieved compensation for the salary I lost during recovery!

insurance companies say women are safer drivers, but the paucity of females on the professional racing circuits indicates that men are BETTER drivers.

Men don't apply makeup while driving, men don't do their hair while driving, men don't cry when somebody gives them the finger and calls them a filthy name while driving. So the obvious answer is MEN. you can't have woMEN without MEN.
