Mobile communication works between the handset and the BTS (Base transreceiver station) which you commonly called tower. Now the towers a re-arranged in such a way that the communication range of a tower intersects with another leaving no space in between and the fields take the structure of a honey bee "cells". and a tower stands at the center of each cell. The cell phone has derived its name from "Cellular Telephone."
More information can be accessed from wikipedia:
A mobile or cellular telephone is a long-range, portable electronic device for personal telecommunications over long distances.
Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (the exception are satellite phones).

I think "cell phone" is a regional term, used in the USA. "Mobile phone" is what people use in Europe. They are the same thing. There are lots of fun region-specific terms. Like, all soft drinks in and around Atlanta, GA are known as "coke", and I have heard people order "orange coke" in restaurants. Why? Because Coke headquarters is located in Atlanta, GA.
