Was the active account you were using a Computer Administrator account?
If it was, you do not need to do that since you have equal rights as the other system administrator.
If you were not, then, the administrator of you computer might have wanted to prevent you from having higher rights that you should.
But of course if this is your personal system you are talking about, then, you might have maxed out the number of passwords retries & your account has been locked.
Usually, the underlying Administrator account on most personal computers do not have a password. But this account is used for low level system administrative purposes only & the first Computer Administrator member of the PC has the same rights to invoke changes to the system as the Administrator.
Try rebooting your PC & repeatedly press F8 prior to the Windows splash screen.
You will then see a boot options list where you can boot into safe mode.
From there, you can actually perform changes in passwords of your active account without the maximum retires limitation.
One you get the password right, you can reset it & reboot the PC again. This time, you do not have to press F8 & can let the system boot normally.
Your newly modified account password would be active already.
Hope this helps.

If you can get to a CD-R download ophcrack-livecd-1.1.3 and burn it to CD, pop it in the old computer and make sure it boots by CD-ROM. The CD will boot a small linux OS and then crack the password and let you know what it was. Hope this helps ( This does not violate yahoo policy the software is freeware and can be download by searching Ophcrack at google or visiting the sourceforge site for it )
