In the wild:
They poo where ever they are, except at night.
They hold it until daylight, so as not to be caught by one of the other animals that hunt them.
In captivity:
Being as smart as they are they have learned they can let down their guard, there is no threat there, that's when boredom sets in & throw their poo at whom ever comes by.

Monkeys poo anywhere during the day! by during night time is different story! when they poo they hold it in their hands and paste in on tree branches so carefully not to let it drop on the ground, they do this not to attract attention of big cats in the wild( lion and cheetah/leopard)who hunt better when its dark

Both, and they throw it at you, they did us in Panama, nasty creatures some of them.
