If you are thinking of carrying it around every day, definitely pay attention to weight! If you are strong man, 3kg should be alright. Those 3kg for me, for not much trained girl, are putting shoulders and back in pain!
other specifications are according to your needs: graphics, ram, storage...
I chose dell over the others because you save paying salary for the cashier, store, etc. and they bring it to your door!

A wireless card, preferably one by Sprint or another phone company that allows you to use your internet anywhere. Also, if you use video conferencing often, then it would be a good idea to have it built-in. Also, make sure that you have a decent graphics card. Also, having a lot of RAM and GIGS are good just in case. Just a tip, if you use it for your business, have it password protected, good virus software, a good warranty, and also something to back up your files. I prefer an external hard drive.

It all depends on how much you are willing to spend, if you wanting to do heavy intensive stuff try AMD, either Athlon dual core or Turion x2 (dual core) , if you plan on useing your laptop away from home where pwr plugs are not available go for the Turion Processor x2 over the Athlon as its not as sore on the battery as the athlon but still delivers the same kick as the athlon.
Also go for at least 1gig of ram, no less especially if you are running XP, also try to get a laptop that has a stand alone video card rather than a video card that shares your system's ram, getting a laptop that has a stand alone video card will free up your systems ram.

battery life, egronomics, size, and power.
For my needs IBM Thinkpads work great, and have much higher build quality than dell/HP
The Thinkpad Z series also has a built in web-cam option
