It is a project to discover what can be known via pure deductive reasoning.
This project began in antiquity and has gone on and on, basically a long and careful conversation between many great minds. Some believe the project is done, and what is now denoted by the term "philosophy" is really something else, maybe "critical theory." We have gotten to the point that we see "pure deductive reasoning" as a naive idea; our current modes of logical truth-finding are always wrapped up in our socio-political, psychological, physiological, etc. situations. In other words, "philosophy" was really an evolving rubric of systemic reasoning that eventually outgrew itself, moved the philosophers to recognize that the static systems developed by past philosophers had their limits, and to go beyond those limits would require them to go beyond philosophy. Many believe Nietzsche was the real springboard of this development.
