I think it is due to youngsters using text messaging all the time, and schools not bothering to correct them for fear of abuse. Village schools round here make children do spelling homework and they are tested every week. They also have to put the words into sensible sentences. Apart from that, do people bother to use the spell check button?

Obviously the provision of a spell-checker at the end of a 'click' is just too much for some people to use, no matter if it is biased to the yankee way of spelling certain words - try typing in the word
O F F E N S I V E without the spaces then spell-check it !

Those who have done spelling research know that spelling has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence or IQ but rather visual memory. If it bothers you that much, do not read them. This is an open forum for all different types of people of varying backgrounds and cultures. The "meat" so to speak is in the answer, not spelling or grammar. It's a personal pet peeve, one that truly has no place on a questions and answers board. Good Day.

Yes. Absolutely. Atrocious, egregious, just plain horrible. I hope it doesn't reflect society's real spelling skills (or lack thereof).
I mean, I don't expect everyone to know exactly how to spell hors d'oeuvres but it is sad that people don't know how to spell basic, rudimentary words like "friend" or "great"..

I have Czech & Polish tenants in my house and their spelling and grammer is better than mine. They actually know the meaning of more words in the English Dictionary than I do.. and it's not even their main language!!

There is no excuse for it. People can use the spell checker. If they don't speak English at least it's more understandable why they misspell things.

there isn't something incorrect with the grammar in that sentence, in basic terms the spelling of 'your' as a substitute of 'you're', which would be in basic terms a shortening of the word as is finished in textual content fabric msgs.

yes. it is bad. but sometime, typo errors do occur. it is better to use the check spelling. moreover, people are not much bothered about spellings as long as they are able to communicate.

Yes. The number one word on the interenet that annoys me when people use incorrectly is lose: when they type it as "loose".
Or when they type "looser" - when they mean loser.
I mean even people with some intellect seem to make this mistake. They are the dirty unwashed.

It is absolutely appalling but then what do you expect. I teach 8 year olds and even they write, in stories, text speak. It drives me mad. I tell you something else that annoys me too and that is awful grammar and people who don't even ask a question.
Sorry rant over - good question!
