Are most of them just ignorant or do they actually think they chose to be that way!?!? I mean, don't they realize people are born that way just like someone was born black or another asian!?!?

Also, just to set something, I am a Christian, but being gay I believe is something one is born with, as in not being a choice so why would God make gay people?

Wow, I am shocked at the majority of the answers. Perhaps they think that ACTING on being gay/lesbian is a choice?

Anyways I do agree with you. People JUST don't understand that you can't control feelings. You DON'T get to choose what sex you like. Why do you think a big percentage of gays in denials kill themselves? Many try to like the opposite sex. but you CAN'T choose what you like. I just can't stress it enough. I don't know from personal experience, but I do know I couldn't pretend to like women because deep down inside I never would have sexual desires for women even if I wanted to. You can't force yourself to have sexual desires for something you don't want it for, and that is why straight people think being gay is a "choice".

This is a silly debate.

We are applying emotion to a scientific issue. It's like saying you agree or disagree with the speed of light.

I'm not an expert by any means but I don't believe this question has been completely answered scientifically yet.

My question remains: Why does it matter?

I am gay whether I was born this way or chose it. Either way I am still denied the rights that heterosexuals enjoy in many areas of life here in America.

I think a lot of gay people feel that if they can convince people that it is biological then they will automatically be granted rights. We know from history that isn't true. Women had to fight for the right to vote and still make less per hour than men in the same job. People of color were obviously "born that way" and I don't think I really need to explain the treatment they receive still.

Why don't we just stop debating this silly issue and move on to something productive?

They "believe" it's a choice. The word "think" hardly applies. If they thought about it, they'd realize that it's ridiculous to believe that someone chooses what they are attracted to. Most gay people I've known tell me that they knew when they were very young that they were gay. I ask the straight fundies, "So, somewhere in your sexual development you reached a point where you made a conscious decision to be attracted to the opposite sex, and it didn't just happen naturally?" But that doesn't work for them, because their premise is that if some people are born gay, then God makes mistakes. So they have to deny everything they see and hear and know and cling tenaciously to their little mantra, "homosexuality is a choice." They don't think it, they just believe it.

I don't know if it's a choice, or just a sum of your environment, but it must in some way be a choice, as it is not so much of a trait as a tendency. But if it is absolutly not a choice (which would be through DNA, which is unlikely as it has been proven that DNA has no influence in homosexuality) it would be because straight people have not experience the "lack of choice" you're referring to. There are some factors, like the more older brothers you have, the more likely you are to be gay, so if it is environmental, then you do have a choice, what is affected is the difficulty of the choice and the choice you will make. Of course, feelings for others is not a choice. I will cite myself, as a heterosexual, I never chose to be sexually attracted to females, that came either naturally, or through influences in my environment. I'm sure if I wanted to, I could eventually learn to be gay, but that is not what my environment has led me to want to do. So I believe it comes down to your environment, which is beyond your choice. Just remember, though, I know several gay people who said that thier gaiety WAS a choice, so I think it comes down to the degree of it. I hope this helps.

They think it is a choice because they feel self righteous in the false knowledge that if it is a choice then that would somehow make it ok for them to condemn and hold contempt for gays and lesbians and other members of the GLBT community. They of course could not and would not make that choice because aside from being raised with false stereotypes and assumptions, they are heterosexual and so there is no choice to make.Just like when people are homosexual there is no choice that was made to be so.They don't know or realize that there is more then a behavior of homosexuality. There is also an emotional, physical, and chemical variation that they either don't know about or ignore. They focus only on the behavior aspects and utilize their stereotypical opinions to form judgments that give them the belief about homosexuality being a choice. They think homosexuality is like choosing what kind of car to buy or what kind of beverage to drink. If that is not self diluted propaganda I don't know what is.

The Bible says it is a choice, where one chooses the truth or a lie.
Rom 1:25 'Who changed the truth into a lie, and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever amen.'
I suggest you start reading at verse 24 and continue to 32. I personally believe it is a spiritual stronghold and a mental illness. I have seen people who after much counselling be delivered from homosexuality. You also need to understand that God created Blacks and Asians out of love. The devil corrupted sexuality out of hate for a loving God. being born a certain race will never be equivalent to giving into a sin. My prayers are with you.

The only choice in homosexuality is the decision to accept it or reject it. Those who accept it are generally happier than those who do not.

Much in the same way you never made a conscience decision to find blue eyes more attractive than green. Or Blonde hair more attractive than red. Or any other physical trait. Gay men and Women do not wake up one day and decide to find their own sex attractive. They *DO* wake up one day and *REALIZE* they find their own sex attractive, though.

We simply do NOT choose the physical traits we are attracted to. However, since The Bible never says anything about any person who finds blonde hair attractive is abomination it never gets the same amount of "air play".

Because it is a choice though God may have wired certain men up that way. I use to be gay, honestly, but I prayed and prayed to Jesus Christ every night until the attractiveness towards men faded away. I hope this helps. God Bless!

That is just how people are brought up, to think that people choose to be gay. You don't choose who you are attracted to, that is something that is just in you from day one. So, I agree with you. :)
