Every time I come to a dinner party at my good friend and his wife's house, her mom just picks on me. First time when I met her- she asked me what do I do for a living and when I told her that I'm an aspiring actress she was like "So, do you have a real job?". I was so shocked I couldn't even answer anything to her.
For this Thanksgiving I was invited to my friend's house again and among other guests-the mom was there again. This time she was even more rude- when I told everybody that my pet cought a cold- she asked:"What? It's non dead yet?" and then she dropped hints that I'm milking my husband of 10 years for money. I was sitting pretty close to her so while she was talking aloud- nobody really noticed what she said. I just pretended nothing happened.
I usually don't get offended by people like her- maybe she's an unhappy person etc., but it pisses me off that she allowes herself to make these kind of comments and I want it to stop. What should I do?

She sounds like a lonely old lady that is trying to draw attention to her self, and make her target more miserable than her. If she knows that there is somebody more miserable than her, then she can be happy. Sick and twisted I know. And a little sad too. Ignore her as much as possible, if you can. If you don't respond, you don't play her game. And eventually a new target will come along. Now if your a little warped and twisted, with a silver tongue, (as I am) you can turn her words around. Say something funny to her comments, she'll soon ignore you. If witty banter isn't your cup of tea then, ignore her. Old hens cackle much and say little. She'll soon find new dirt to scratch in.

A few well worded calm responses will shut her down. Your best bet would be to get her alone and pull her extremely close and in your calmest "I'm going to boil your bunny" voice tell her exactly what your going to do with her (notice I said with and not to) she'll be so freaked out she'll never speak ill of you again. If she does claim plausible deniability and shoot back with counter accusations...works every time.

I think this is though, but not imposible, In my opinion, you should talk to her, and I know you might feel like you want to slap her, or just curse at her, but really all you have to do is tell her, that she's embarrasing you infront of people, and ask her what is annoying her about you, because obiously something is bothering her-- about you, and, if she tries to change the subject, look straight in her eyes and ask her again.

I would say either ignore it or if she keeps it on take her outside and tell her"Look,When i have come over ,you have been very critical and have said some things that i didn't not quite appreciate,i find your behavior very rude and i would really appreciate it if you kept your comments to yourself. We are both adults and I dont insult you."

Tell your friend to have this stopped. And you can also tell her outright too. That's really rude what she said about your job.

don't let her bug you... she's old and grumpy, you can't really change her, so ignore her.
