I have been told that it matters how much diesel you put into the tank. If you did the whole tank, you better get it emptied before you even try starting it. If you only did a few gallons you might be able to get by with mixing more gas with to create a lower diesel ratio. Yes the car is going to smoke and run a little different but it should still run if the percentage is low enough. Just remember to never do it again. The vehicle should stop running when you cut the power to the fuel pump. You most likely wouldn't have enough compression to make the diesel to combust like in a normal diesel motor. I believe in your older cars/ truck/ tractors the carburetors were gravity feed and now most are fuel injection with fuel pumps pushing the fuel at maybe 6-20psi(don't quote me on psi). It wouldn't hurt to change your fuel filter after the diesel is gone. Diesel fuel is a lower grade of fuel then gas.

Depending on how much you added, you may have a REAL PROBLEM! My ex-wife did this to our daughter's car last year... filled up at the diesel pump by mistake. They had to drain and flush the entire fuel system: gasoline tank, fuel line, filters, and injectors. This is expensive because of the labor involved.
If you only added a gallon or so before noticing, and immediately filled the remainder of the tank with gasoline, you can probably get away with it this one time. See the web sites cited.
If you actually filled the tank with diesel fuel, you will need to drain and flush your fuel system, a procedure best performed by your dealer or a really good mechanic, who will also find and replace the fuel line filters (possibly two, one in the gasoline tank and one in the fuel line in the engine compartment, but maybe located somewhere else that isn't at all obvious).
I would suggest you have your vehicle towed in for this maintenance. Diesel fuel is not good for modern fuel-injected engines. Plan on spending a few hundred bucks to drain and flush the fuel tank, fuel lines, and injectors.
Sorry about your luck.

Once you get it running on the diesel you will have a hard time shuting it down. Plus it will smoke to beat all. Probably ruin the plugs too (oil fouled). My brother put kerosene (very close to diesel) in the lawn mower and it ran about twice as fast as it should for a couple min. until it threw a rod through the side of the motor. You need to drain the tank and refill it with gasoline.

You fail to mention how much and what kind of vehicle. If it still has a carburettor then it probably won't hurt if it is about a 70 30 mix.70 being gas. the newer fuel inj vehicles will not run on diesel at all. You will most definitely have to drain the complete system and change the gas filter.

Absolutely nothing. You should only worry on high compression premium cars like corvettes, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW. These makes will require premium gas only. Depending on the amount of diesel in the tank, you might notice a bluish smoke coming from the tailpipe, rough idle, but nothing really serious. If anything, you might want to replace the spark plugs after due to excessive carbon build up.

No big deal. Siphon the diesel out the tank, You're going to get a lot of exhaust smoke for a while, but your machine will be OK.

Expensive accident....You will have to have the system completely flushed out, Gas tank emptied, fuel filter changed, injectors cleaned, basically the entire fuel system will need to be cleaned out to ensure that all the diesel fuel is out of it.
