Stonehenge

Monumental circular arrangement of standing stones built in prehistoric times and located near Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng. The stones are believed to have been put in place in three main phases c. 3100–c. 1550 BC. The reasons for the building of Stonehenge are unknown, but it is believed to have been a place of worship and ritual. Many theories have been advanced as to its specific purpose (e.g., for the prediction of eclipses), but none has been proved. Stones erected during the second phase of construction (c. 2100 BC) were aligned with the sunrise at the summer solstice, suggesting some ritual connection with that event-.

Most scholars believe it was built by pure brute labor. For more info about stonehenge, see the links below.

"The construction of this megalithic monument is both confusing and mystifing. But to the builders, it may have just been a way of life.
Here is another theory:
"Some people claim to have seen UFOs in the area, perhaps connected with the military installations around Warminster, that has led to ideas over it being an extraterrestrial landing site. Alfred Watkins found three ley lines running through the site and others have employed numerology dowsing or geomancy to reach diverse conclusions regarding the site's power and purpose." per wikipedia-

well the earliest part--the henge--is the bank and ditch which was carved out with antler picks/ The stones themselves were brought down the rivers and possibly brought on sledges pulled by either men or oxen. Again, it is very unlikely to be done by 'slaves' (not enough population) but a community effort by people who worshipped celestial events and also revered their ancestors who were buried in the aubrey holes inside the ditch and in the burial mounds all over Salisbury Plain. They may have believe the spirits of ancestors or gods actually resided in the stones--a fair few stones at Stonehenge have 'features' or vaguely look person-shaped, & I have seen this at other stone circles too. The lintels were probably put up using wooden scaffolding; another level would be built each time they inched the capstone up, until it could be fixed on the mortice & tenon joint. The builders were skilled woodworkers, who had a least 3 or 4 huge wooden temples about 2 mi away at Durington Walls. Re: druids. It was not 'celtic druids' who built the stones; they did not arrived till 55 BC approx and worshipped in oak groves. One poster mentioned about the Cornis,Welsh h etc--but they have put the cart before the horse. Recent dna tests have shown most people in britain (including the English) are neither saxons nor 'celts' but descendants of men of the Old & New stone age.
