Hamster, Guinniepig, Rabbit, Mouse, Rat, Gerbal, Lizards of alsorts, Small Birds, Budgies are great pets and they pick up words really easily. Chinchillas. Chipmunks. Spider. Alsorts of insects. Gold fish. Tropical fish (although they are harder to look after).
Ask @ your pet shop what would be best there are so many out there to choose from. It all depends if you want a pet that is easy to care for or if you fancy a challenge. Pets such as lizards, spiders, insects, Tropical fish etc all need to be kept at certain tempertures and fed certain foods. Chipmunks and Chinchillas do better in pairs. All animals are better in pairs i believe, we all like company at times and animals get on better if they have a friend. A rabbit and Guinniepig go good together.
Hope this was some help??

Do a good deed and find a pet that someone is trying to find a new home for...for free. Some people will give you the cage and supplies too. Talk to someone at the Pet Store to find out how much it costs to look after each type of pet you may choose. Get some wood shavings from a woodworker. Some may have more "expensive" tastes. Do a little checking on the internet to get more info. Stuff like:
Hamsters are cute and all but they sleep in the day and you shouldn't keep waking them.
Can you take Gerbils out to play?
Degus are excellent and fun and but they need a friend.
Who's going to keep you awake at night?

A same-sex pair of rats are a fantastic idea IF you have the time to give them the attention they deserve. Rats shouldn't be left in the cage the whole time, they need to come out to explore and interact with you otherwise they'll be bored and unhappy.
If you just want a pet to leave in the cage and watch, I'd suggest a pair of dwarf hamsters (same-sex again).
Also bear in mind that if you keep a pet animal, even a low cost one, you owe them the benefit of vet care when needed.

How much time do you have to spend with it? How much work do you want to do? Do you have outside space for it? Guinea pigs are great pets, easy to look after, affectionate, no expensive. but they do enjoy being outside some of the time. Ferrets are one of the best pets in the world but need a lot of love and affection and plenty of handling. They can be expensive too and really unless you want to breed them, which I wouldn't recommend, should be neutered. The males can be aggressive when they are in season and the females can become very ill if they come into season and aren't mated.

I suggest a apir of rats. Now don't go EEww. I was a little skeptical myself at first bnut my kids really wanted one. I leanred that they are social and should be kept in pairs to keep them from dying of loneliness. Unlike hamsters, gerbils, or mice my rats have never once bitten me. They won't keep you up running in their wheel at all hours of the night. They'll pretty much keep with your schedule. They love to be held and played with. They live 2-3 years. They are very intelligent and even learn their names. Mine know to climb on their cage door and into my hand in the morning to get their first pellet. That's another thing. Rat food is cheap and they only need 3-4 blocks of food each day. The only real expense is the cage. But the rat itself will run only around $10

Hamsters and Gerbils are entertaining, come in a wide variety of marking and colors, are low maintenance and can even be taken out of their cage to be held and petted. Inexpensive to purchase and feed and they live longer than a year.

What about a short man? You can let them run each day for half an hour. To feed them is fairly cheap beer and chips. Sometimes they learn to talk, but that can be tricky and you have to persevere. For some strange reason they never hear the door or the phone which can be a bit of a set back. Oh yes and they do live for longer than a year.

a golden hamster is a lovely pet. Cheap to buy and very cheap and easy to look after. With regular gentle handling they are very tame and lovely little characters. They will live three years with good living conditions and diet. It says on websites two years, but ours was three. We had one who just died recently, I'm going to get another, not for my son who isnt interested now, but for me, because I miss ours! They are funny little creatures and are good to teach children responsibility. They don't have tails either, which put some people off mice, gerbils and rats and they are cuter!

Get a pair of rats! Trust me, I've had nearly every type of small, cage-dwelling pet available, and rats are the best hands down. I've had hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, newts, lizards, snakes, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and short tail opossums, but none compare to rats. Why?
1. Rats are cheap! You can get one at a pet store for around $5, and their food and other supplies are about as inexpensive as any other caged pet. They don't require any special things like bath dust or fancy food.
2. Rats are easy. They require very little maintenance, and tend to smell less than hamsters and gerbils. Although they're normally nocturnal, they quickly adapt to your schedule, so they won't keep you awake at night. They don't take up much space, either. They're very clean, and don't leave trails of poop or pee everywhere they go like most rodents. In fact, several of mine were even litter box trained, making cage cleaning even easier!
3. Rats are super friendly. I've been bitten by every pet I've owned, EXCEPT rats. They very, very rarely bite. They take a genuine interest in people, so they enjoy being out to play not only to explore but to really interact with you. Also, they're not super hyper like other pets, so you can actually play with them without having to worry about them running under something and never getting them back.
4. Rats are very smart. Every rat I've owned has known its name and could come when called. Unlike other small animals, they understand the word "no" and can be trained to do almost anything. Mine knew to stay in my room while they were out of their cage, came when I called them, and would go back to their cage when I told them to. Several of mine also knew the names of the people in my family, and would go to whichever one I asked them to!
