Magnesium reacts incredibly slowly with cold water, and it takes about a week to collect even a few cubic centimtres of hydrogen gas. However, if phenolphthalein is added to the water at the end of the experiment, it will turn pink. This confirms that a solution of the not very soluble magnesium hydroxide has been formed.
