Because it is human nature to be curious and want to know what is going on in the world especially ones own small little world like your work environment or you school environment. They also have the need for information as that is how we learn and grow. Like for instance I heard a story on the news about some human remains that had been discovered in a wooded area near where I live. I wanted more info about this story so I dug (no pun intended) for some more info about it on the Internet. As humans we want to learn as much as we can so if somebody has something interesting to tell us we listen and if it is really good, really interesting then we pass it on and that is how gossip gets started. Just my thoughts on it! Hope this is helpful. *hugs* JAC<

There's gossip and then there's gossip. I'll join a conversation, usually not start it, and my comments will be toward why things are happening, what could be done about them, and what allowances might be made.
Some people gossip specifically to talk smack and hurt other people.
Either way, those who participate actually benefit. This is one of the major ways that we learn social values, remind ourselves and others, and evaluate our beliefs compared to others'.
It is a very positive experience for everyone but the people of whom others speak.
So I watch how I say what I say, and come from a place of compassion. I am blameless in those instances when I choose to get involved. If nothing else, sometimes I get involved to turn the conversation around, shame the people who are too critical, and shed some love in the situation.
Unless I'm talking about strangers in a foreign town and I say- "Did you SEE what she was wearing?"

Maybe the people who like to gossip the most really are bored with their lives and they like to create tension in other peoples lives just to have something to do.
