The nature of Earth's core is known from several types of evidence. First, we know the mass of the Earth from applying the laws of gravity to orbital information about the Moon. The enables scientists to calculate information about the density of the portions of the Earth that are deeper than the locations from which any samples have been obtained. This lets the scientists make deductions about what substances are present in the core. Secondly, the Earth's magnetic field tells us that a conductor is moving inside the Earth. This is the solid iron core, surrounded by molten iron. Additional information about this structure is gained through seismic analysis.

When earthquakes hit, they produce different kinds of waves. There are Primary waves (P waves), Secondary waves (S waves), and Surface waves. P waves travel the fastest and can pass through solids, liquids and gases. S waves con only pass through solids. These waves are recorded from all over the world, even on the other side of where an earthquake originates. When scientists record an earthquake on the other side of the world, they only receive P waves, and not S waves. S waves can be recorded at angles from the origin (say 50 degrees). This can be done from any spot on earth. When combined together (recording the data), you get a center that only P waves can pass. The S waves don't reach this circle, telling us there is a liquid outer core. The inner core is solid and through calculations of speed, there needs to be a solid interior to explain the differences in calculations.

That, and the magnetic field theory.

There is no direct proof. But from calculations, it is deduced the Earth is not hollow, for if there is no core, and a solid and dense one for the matter, all of us would not be anchored by this gravity force.
