You are almost correct in what you are saying but,if I can let me give you some full details.
Simon Cowell works for a company Called B.M.G (British Music Group) whose boss is Simon Fuller, and this company actually sponsor the show and in turn collect royalties when the show is sold overseas, they (BMG) also own the rights to the American version of the show.
You are right in saying the Simon earns a fortune out of these shows and the winner of the competition,as we have seen in the past ,does not make a great deal out of the show unless they are really lucky. The reason being its "just a show".
It is strongly rumoured that this years show will be the last because Simon has had enough.

In a sense yes, the TV and music moguls find the contestants, exploit them for all they are worth, then cast them aside when their time is up. They make a lot of money in the process through people phone and text voting, and buying the resultant singles.

But I always think that the stars have the power to create or 'uncreate' themselves. This programme is a stage on which they display their talents (and yes, some of them ARE genuinely talented) for the prize of a guaranteed record deal at the end. But after that it is up to them if they actually make anything of themselves.

The British public has put them in that position, so that tells the music moguls that the winner has a fan base and is marketable. The market research has been done for them in one foul swoop. But the star can then decide if they want to push their career for all it's worth, or fade into obscurity. They spin the money for themselves or see it dry up. It is also up to them if they are successful or not. If they are also 'winners' or not.

Ok, so people made a lot of money out of Steve Brookstein or David Sneddon, or whoever and they have now disappeared. Used, exploited, money spinned, cast aside. But others who appeared on these types of shows have done very well for themselves (Girls Aloud, Will Young, Lemar). Used, exploited, money spinned, career pushed, still going strong.

of course, anyone with sense will know this, its the managers that make the big bucks, the acts just get the left overs and most of them only have a shelf life of a few years max, what makes me laugh is that many of the people/acts on the show actually think they are wonderful and that they are going to be mega stars, how naive and incredibly cocky of them, most of them primarily only appeal to youngsters but when kids get fed up with them they are forgotten about. They need to have mass appeal to a variety of age groups which means they need to be able to do a diverse range of music to fall back on so they still get loyal older fans and can keep their popularity, but most of them can only attempt one style of music and their voices are neither good or unique, most are off key but the the probelm is that many of todays younger generation are brought up on this rubbish thinking that these people have good singing voices and so don't even know what actual brillant singing is, i'm only in my early twenties myself but I can see how the quality of music in recent years has really gotton bland, too many of these girl and boy bands look and sound similar and rely on image to sell records rather than talent, the same can be said for alot of solo artists these days as well, most lady singers rely on wearing very short skirts showing off their legs to get people to buy their music, its such a damn shame but nothing can be done about it, if people want to waste their hard earned cash on this tosh then thats up to them, the only way it can be stopped is if the general public realise they are being conned and make a stance and stop buying such crap.

This is a breathtaking revelation , all this time there i was beieving that everything in the show was genuine...surely you cant mean that the show is totally scripted and that it has absolutely nothing to do with talent?....next you'll be telling us that the dodgy auditions, tantrums of the judges even the phone votes are all staged.....I can't believe that I was so gullible....x
