I have traveled by myself and with others. Both have pro's and con's. You can do what you want to without worrying about anyone else's feelings or schedule and you usually meet interesting people when you travel by yourself. However, you will be by yourself until you meet other people. It takes a self confident person to travel by his/her self and actually enjoy it!

Either alone or with my friends because my family drives me up the wall on vacations; plus a majority of my family vacations end in trips to the emergency room (they're all accident prone!)

Alone! You can stop to pee when you want to, there's less stuff to bring, and noone is fighting over what should be the activity of the day. And it's cheaper!
